Chess Club – Policies and FAQs

When is chess class?

All chess classes are held once per week, during lunch/recess. The Fall Session goes from TBD until TBD. Classes are held on all regular school days. First graders meet on TBD, Second graders meet on TBD, and Grades 3-5 meet on TBD.

Is there chess on early dismissal days?

No. Chess classes do not meet on early dismissal days.

How are students grouped?

First and second graders are grouped according to their classroom teacher. Grades 3-5 are grouped together. Depending on enrollment, classes may be split by gender in grades 2-5.

Should I register my child for the tournament class?

If your child is in grades 3-5 and is enthusiastic about chess, he or she may enjoy participating in the tournament class. The Club places great emphasis on sportsmanship and team building as a cornerstone of its program. Please note that enrollment in the tournament class is subject to review. The tournament class is designed for students with some tournament experience who would like to continue to improve their game and participate in tournaments. Those students interested in joining the Bronxville Chess Team at the U.S. National Championship in the Spring may want to consider the tournament class, and should commit to participating in a number of local tournaments in order to train for Nationals. See the tournament FAQs section below for more information, and feel free to contact us at with any questions.

When will I know my child’s chess class and location?

The schedule, class lists, and classroom locations will be sent out prior to the first class.

Do I really need to pack a lunch on chess days?

Yes! Chess instructors usually spend the first 30 minutes of class talking about important rules and strategy. If children go to the cafeteria to purchase lunch, they miss a valuable part of the lecture, and coming in late to the classroom may cause some disruption to the learning environment.

Why do you need parent volunteers? What do I have to do? Do I have to know how to play chess? How do I sign up?

No chess knowledge is required! Parent participation ensures the class runs smoothly and lets parents see the chess program in action. See chess parent volunteers link on the left for details. You will receive an email with a link to a Signup Genius page once the classes are formed.

Where do your chess instructors come from?

The Bronxville Chess Club has worked with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation (NSCF) for many years. The NSCF’s mission is to improve education and inspire excellence through chess, while developing critical thinkers. NSCF teachers work with over 70 schools in the area and organize chess tournaments in New York and Connecticut. For more information, visit
