Our homework club is back with a new makeover! Now formally called Homework Mentoring, this course will have students learning organizational strategies, reviewing material that aligns to curriculum, and allows them the opportunity to complete their classroom assignments. The big change this semester is that in addition to working closely with Dr. Thomas, elementary students will have the opportunity to be inspired by high school student volunteers. This new course will have young students completing their homework, feeling motivated by Bronxville’s upperclassman, and learning techniques to make them better students overall.
Fashion Hobby Quest 2-5 16 $220

Nothing says “Back to School” like new clothes, and what could be more fun than making them yourself! This fall we’ll be tapping into our inner fashionista and designing one-of-a-kind wearable garments of your very own! Creating chic designs has never been more fun, we’ll teach you the ins and outs of garment design and creation, from choosing a design and sketching, to final fitting! Using beginners’ hand sewing skills, this semester we will create a full outfit including a colorful cotton top and trendy denim skirt, and even accessories! At the end of the session we’ll even put on a runway fashion show for friends and family! All designs are yours to keep at the end of class!

Cooking Kathy Valdes 3-5 10 $220 Calling young chefs who wish to master dishes to impress friends and parents! In this fun cooking class, children will learn how to make recipes from around the world. Wontons from China, Madeleines and crepes from France, chicken Yakitori from Japan, and hummus from Egypt are just a sampler of the foods we will be making from scratch. We will learn how to use cooking utensils safely and young chefs will bring home a global cook book at the end of the session.

Coding through Space Exploration Brad Ashley 4-5 12 $220 Students will aim for the skies and learn about the Engineering Design Process while coding. Students will be using a variety of mediums and technology to learn how NASA uses the Engineering Design process to solve everyday problems on the mission and also learn how to code to explore other planets. This course will combine a basic level of coding (in a variety of languages) and also be hands on as students create prototypes of solutions to problems encountered on NASA missions. In addtions students will have the opporunity to Skype with a space walk operator from NASA.
WeDo Robotics Computer Adventure 1-2 12 $250 This class provides the opportunity for the younger children to get an introduction to simple robotics. Build and program dancing birds, drumming monkeys, hungry alligators, roaring lions and more. Students learn to build models, attach sensors and motors, and use a computer to program the model’s actions and behaviors. Students will also learn about simple engineering concepts such as pulleys, belts, gear and levels, while having a blast with their creations. Students can repeat this course; instructor can challenge students with different robot projects.
Minecraft Survival Quest Computer Adventures 3-5 12 $250 Students will navigate the Minecraft world to explore, complete quests, strategize and build creations in a logical way to survive in the virtual 3D world. They will practice creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork and collaboration with proper online etiquette. To ensure a fun and safe “cyber” environment, every student’s laptop is connected to a local network without access to the internet. Concepts such as network, server, client and applications will also be discussed.
Animal Adventures Nature of Things 1-5 15 $220 A fun, hands on, learning experience with live animals. We will cover topics such as animal defenses, habitats, adaptations, and skeletons with different mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. We may also include some arts and crafts related projects on occasion for the students to take home. Come enjoy with us!
Rock 101 School of Rock 3-5 8 $250 Young rockers learn pitch, rhythm, and musical teamwork through musical games and group rehearsal of simple rock songs. This hour-long program is entirely group based, so kids learn how to play in a band right from the start. This program includes one weekly group rehearsal where they will experience the magic of playing classic rock hits on one or more of the major rock instruments: guitar, bass, keyboard/piano, drums, and vocals.

Fore! Golf is back! Students will have the opportunity to take class outside the Bronxville campus and explore golf at Dunwoodie Golf Course. Kids will learn the proper way to hit their driver, irons, and hone their short game skills with putting and chipping. The class will be taught by two trained golf instructors that will work with the kids both individually and in small groups. Whether your child has experience with golf or has never picked up a club, this is bound to be a great class! While we will supply golf clubs, students are welcome to store their own clubs in the BASC office the day of class.

WeDo Brickfilms Computer Adventures 2-5 12 $250 Lights…Camera…Action! Students’ dreams of having their favorite LEGO ® characters come to life become a reality in our movie making class. Using stop-motion animation and digital post-production editing, students produce Brickfilms much like the ones viewed on YouTube. Students learn about developing creative storytelling techniques, incorporating visual and audio special effects. This is a great class to take with friends. Students can repeat the class; they will make better and different movies.
Junior Explores Mad Science 1-3 12 $220 Join Mad Science this session and discover why science is the real star on the big screen. You’ll create cool sound effects and build your very own robot hand to take home in a class that focuses on technology. Harness the sun’s heat and ramp up a power generation station. Get linked in to a network and work with radio signals. Conduct hands on experiments that will provide the opportunity to explore the force of gravity and even defy gravity! Some of the classes in this session include: Movie Effects, The Science of Magic, Sonic Sounds, Optical Illusions, Wacky Water, The Science of Toys, Radical Robots, The Science of Art, Great Gravity and Get Connected.
Sew Happy Sew Happy 1-4 14 $220

Another new project from Sew Happy! Kids will enjoy sewing this adorable stuffed dachshund with floppy ears and a cheeky tongue. Students who take this class will learn the basics of sewing including measuring floss, separating the floss, threading a needle and tying a knot.

Fine motor skills are used to cut fabric, match pieces together and follow pre-printed stitch lines. Each week there are set tasks to complete which are broken down in to manageable steps, thus boosting the child’s ego upon completion.

This project uses straight stitch and whip stitch and we have extra options for students who are ready for a more challenging project. Students are required to sew buttons in this class and this will provide them with a wonderful life skill which will be useful for the rest of their lives!

Introduction to Guitar John Chang 1-3 12 $220 THIS CLASS IS FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS ONLY!!! This class teaches beginners the basics of playing the guitar with interactive instruction. Concordia Conservatory’s John Chang has lots of experience teaching strumming, chords, note reading and beginning guitar technique. Each participant is required to bring his/her own guitar.

Movie Making: Create Your Own Coming Attraction The Picture House 1-3 12 $220 In this class we’ll learn all about the basics of filmmaking, from creating characters and camera technique to storyboarding, acting and directing. Students will brainstorm the plot for their feature film, then work together to film and act out a trailer to promote their big idea. Once the video is edited, student’s will have the opportunity to see their work on the big screen at the Spring Student Showcase in March at The Picture House.
Debate & Public Speaking 4-5 12 $220 Debate can be fun, demanding and rewarding! Learn to choose a side, make a point and persuade others to agree with you in a clear and concise way. Students will learn how to speak in front of others comfortably and confidently. Whether they are convincing their parents of something or giving their graduation address, public speaking is a skill that can be used for a lifetime. Quiet and shy or loud and outgoing – all students have the ability to be powerful debaters.

3-5 24 $220 A new game kicks into Bronxville! MatBall is very similar game to kickball, with one team kicking and the other team fielding. The primary difference is that, rather than small bases intended for a single runner per base, large bases that can accommodate multiple runners are used, giving the game its name, “Matball.” As a result of allowing unlimited runners per base there are no force outs. A kicking team is retired after a set of five outs is recorded. MatBall has made advanced the game of kickball making it faster paced and allowing more action for players on both teams. In addition to matball we will be playing other games such as funball that emphasize participation, challenge and fun coupled with a healthy spirit of competition and a winning spirit.

Prerequisite: Students should have experience with building simple games in Scratch, including how, add sprites and backgrounds, to control sprites with the keyboard or mouse, and have sprites interact with other sprites or background (i.e. create a score counter).

Mindfulness Jillian Tomlin 2-5 12 $220 What is Mindfulness and how can we use mindful techniques in school and life? Mindfulness is noticing what is happening in the present moment. Mindfulness can help us learn to pay close attention to many things. It can also help us calm down when we are angry, sad, frustrated, or have any difficult emotion. Mindfulness can help us notice when we are happy or grateful too. It can also help us focus in school, sports, music, etc. Each day students will experience lessons such as mindful listening, mindful bodies, mindful breathing, body scans, mindful walking, and mediation.
